Australian ebook retailer eBooks.com has launched free reading apps for iOS and Android, with new accessibility features for readers.
The apps work with accessibility features already available on Apple and Android devices, including VoiceOver and TalkBack screen readers. Readers can also change the text size, typeface, spacing, alignment, colours and margins to make books easier and more comfortable to read.
There are also reading options for people with dyslexia and people with different visual and reading preferences.
The apps were developed in partnership with the European Digital Reading Lab and Swedish digital reading technology company Colibrio. They support offline reading and a range of ebook formats, including fixed-layout EPUBs, audio-visual content, manga and textbooks with more complex layouts.
Perth-based eBooks.com has also introduced a new browser-based Online Reader and support for the accessible Thorium desktop reading application.
The new apps give readers more choice over how digital books look and how they are accessed, while making accessibility part of the standard reading experience.
The apps are free to download, although ebooks are purchased separately through eBooks.com.
