Rahul Bajaj, a blind lawyer in India recently filed a complaint against Practo Technologies.  This was for violating the India Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 in what is seen as the first major accessibility case in India.

Mr Bajaj was unable to access the Practo IOS application. This led to Practo being accused of violating Section 46 of this Act along with Chapter VIII (Duties and Responsibilities of Appropriate Governments).  In addition, it was reported that Practo had allegedly broken Rule 15 of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2017.

The case revolves around the Practo IOS application not having a screen reader friendly home screen. Some buttons were unlabelled or had incomprehensible labels. The second page was also inaccessible as it did not have any labels. Furthermore, search results were displayed on one consecutive page rather than at separate points.

Practo Technology is a leading technology company in India.  They provide infrastructure management services, custom application services & enterprise transformation services in Delhi.   The recommended action was that they are penalized for continued non-compliance with the Disability Act.  Also required, was the requirement to submit an accessibility audit report and remedial actions, and given 3 months to take action.
