Laetitia Thompson, Digital Access, Training and Inclusion Coordinator at Centre for Accessibility Australia, recently joined Narelle Wright on The Digital Access Show to chat about accessible social media, why it matters and some practical tips for making content more inclusive.

The Digital Access Show is a podcast hosted by Narelle that explores digital accessibility, inclusive communication and lived experience. Narelle is a digital accessibility specialist with extensive experience in technology and digital systems and has also been a judge for the Australian Access Awards.

During the episode, Laetitia and Narelle talked about the important role social media plays in our everyday lives. It’s where people connect with family and friends, discover events and opportunities, access information and participate in communities online.

For many people with disability, social media can also be an important connection to the world around them. When content isn’t accessible, barriers that may be invisible to some people can prevent others from accessing information or taking part in the conversation.

Accessible social media is about removing those barriers and giving more people the opportunity to engage with content in ways that work for them. It also means thinking about accessibility as part of everyday content creation, rather than treating it as an afterthought.

The conversation covered practical ways to make social media more accessible, and some aren’t as complicated as one might think. These can seem like small considerations, but they can make a meaningful difference to whether someone can access, understand and engage with your content.

Stay tuned for the release of the episode of The Digital Access Show on Sunday to hear Laetitia and Narelle chat more about accessible social media and share some practical tips.
