In the wake of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, TikTok is introducing new updates to its inclusive access features. The platform is expanding its alt-text options to photo posts, allowing creators to add text descriptions to their image posts during upload or after publishing. This feature will provide greater accessibility for people who are blind or have low vision, and will help expand TikTok’s audience reach.
In addition to alt-text, TikTok also provides auto-generated captions for video clips and text-to-speech functionality. The platform has also added a colour contrast switch, which increases the foreground colour of text, icons, and user interface elements, making it more usable for individuals with low vision or sensitivity to low contrast.
Furthermore, TikTok will now respect a user’s device’s bold text setting and automatically display all in-app text in bold when enabled. The platform already offers a range of accessibility options, including text-size controls, dark mode options, and photosensitivity controls, and continues to evolve its tools to better serve all users.
