At Centre for Accessibility Australia (CFA Australia), we’re proud to join the global community in celebrating Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). This annual event serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of digital accessibility and inclusion for over one billion people worldwide living with disability. In Australia alone, approximately 4.4 million people live with disability, with many more impacted by temporary or situational disabilities.
As we mark GAAD, we reflect on the progress made towards creating a more accessible digital landscape. However, we also acknowledge the work still to be done. Digital accessibility is not just a moral imperative; it’s a fundamental human right. Everyone deserves equal access to online information, services, and tools. Yet, many websites and digital services remain inaccessible, with:
1 in 5 Australians experiencing digital exclusion due to disability, age, or location (Australian Digital Inclusion Index)
96% of the top 1 million websites having detectable WCAG failures (WebAIM’s Million report)
People with disability being 30% less likely to use the internet for accessing information, goods, and services (ABS Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers)
At Centre for Accessibility Australia, we’re committed to promoting digital accessibility and inclusion. We believe that the internet is an essential service, and it’s crucial that we create online experiences that are usable by everyone.
Through our work, we aim to empower individuals, organisations, and governments to prioritise accessibility and make digital inclusion a reality.
As we celebrate GAAD, we encourage everyone to take action towards creating a more accessible digital world. Let’s work together to:
Raise awareness about the importance of digital accessibility
Promote inclusive design practices
Support accessibility initiatives and advocacy efforts
By joining forces, we can create a digital world that’s more inclusive, equitable, and accessible for all. Let’s continue to push boundaries and strive for a future where everyone can participate, contribute, and thrive online.
Join the conversation and let’s make digital accessibility a reality for all!
Happy GAAD!
